‘Lion King’ Dancer to Hold Workshop
at GPC’s Rockdale Campus
Professional dancer Smythe, who has performed on Broadway, will hold a lecture/dance workshop at Georgia Perimeter College’s Newton/Rockdale Campus from 2 to 3:15 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21.
“From Dunham to Hip Hop,” will be held in Building B, room 1320. The event, sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Advisory Council, is free and open to the public.
Smythe was formerly on tour with MC Hammer as a performing artist, and was an original cast member of the Tony Award winning Broadway musical “The Lion King.” He is also an actor and vocalist who has lent his voice to such projects as “The Lion King” Broadway soundtrack, “The Lion King II” Simba’s Pride’s movie soundtrack, “Faca Kulu” (South African artist) and “Lion Beast Rhymes.”
Smythe began dancing and performing at the age of five at the Katherine Dunham Center for the Performing Arts (KDCPA) in East St. Louis, Ill. Smythe and his mother, Andrea Smythe, had the privilege of performing with his “Godmother” Katherine Dunham at Carnegie Hall in “Tremonisha.”
Smythe is trained in a wide range of styles, including ballet, modern, tap, jazz, gymnastics, West African, dance theory and dance instruction. He also has training in puppetry arts, stilts, percussion and acting.
An accomplished artist who has traveled the world, Smythe has performed with companies such as H.T. Chen and Dancers; Chuck Davis’ African American Dance Ensemble (AADE), where he was a principal dancer; the Missouri State Ballet; and the Senegalese and Guinea Ballet.
Smythe has taught and choreographed for several dance companies, universities and celebrities locally, nationally and internationally. His performance career includes stints in Japan, Russia, China, Germany, England, South Africa, the Virgin Islands and Brazil.
