Students graduating with a bachelor degree in information technology are in high demand, and now Georgia Perimeter College is doing its part to meet that demand.
GPC is partnering with Georgia Southwestern State University in a program that will allow students to earn their Bachelor of Science degrees in information technology in just three years.
Starting in January, students who complete five terms (one-and-a-half-years) in GPC’s computer science plan of study can then enroll online in
Georgia Southwestern’s information technology program. After another year-and-a-half of online studies, students earn their bachelor degrees from GSW.
The three-year FastTrac Web Bachelor of Information Technology (WebBSIT) agreement between the two colleges was signed Sept. 30 by GPC Interim President Rob Watts and GSW President Dr. Kendall Blanchard.
The program already has a ready group of students eligible for the FastTrac program, says Priscilla Dodds, GPC’s WebBSIT program advisor. “Students who are already enrolled in GPC’s computer science program can opt into this program,” she says. “There is a huge need for IT professionals in computer science; this is a critical area.”
The WebBSIT program is more applied and less theoretical than a traditional computer science degree, says Kim Bennett, GPC’s chair of online math. Courses at GSW include web applications development, systems analysis and design, project management and informational assurance and security.
This is the second FastTrac agreement between the two colleges.
“We have been very successful with our partnership with GPC’s BBA (bachelor of business administration) program in management and accounting,” says GSW’s Blanchard. “GPC is the only school where we have this BBA agreement where students can complete their associate degree and then finish their bachelor’s at GSW in three years. In the future, we hope to have more programs like this with GPC.”
