For Immediate Release

A unique photography and cultural exhibit about a little known Afghanistan ethnic group runs through July 13 at the GPC Dunwoody Library. The exhibit, “The Hazara People of Afghanistan,”is curated by Georgia Perimeter College student Mohammad Rezaee, a native Afghan and a member of the Hazaras, an ancient Persian ethnic group.

Rezaee will give a free lecture Thursday, June 14, from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Auditorium NC 1100. There will be a reception in the LRC gallery from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Rezaee was encouraged to curate photography exhibit after receiving many questions about his heritage. “I believe that if Americans are involved in Afghanistan, they should know more about the country and its people,” Rezaee says. A GPC student studying computer science, Rezaee fled the Taliban in 1995 to Pakistan—his family was persecuted because of their ethnicity, he says.
He emigrated to the U.S. in late 2003.

“Afghanistan has at least four ethnic groups, and people have been treated differently based on their ethnicity,” he says. The photography show was a result of others curiosity, and Rezaee’s own desire to share his heritage.

“Since I’ve emigrated to the USA, I’ve been asked at least 100 times where I’m from. So I thought it would hold a Hazara of Afghanistan exhibit to show the rich history of the Hazara people,” Rezaee says.

With the help of photographer friends from Afghanistan and the GPC Office of International Education, Rezaee has put together an exhibit featuring 38 stunning photos of the Hazara people and the land, as well as a display of traditional costumes and jewelry.
