Those plastic grocery bags you’ve tucked away for a rainy day have another use. Students at the GPC Newton Campus are collecting them to be crocheted into mats for the homeless by the Presbyterian women at the First Presbyterian Church in Covington.
Old eyeglasses are also needed. They’ll be recycled by Dr. Brad Jacoby, a Covington ophthalmologist who is collecting eyeglasses for indigent patients.
And if you’ve recently replaced your cell phone—bring the old one to GPC Newton. They are being collected to donate to soldiers.
These items, as well as old CDs and DVDs, toner cartridges, old computers, and obsolete electronic gadgets, are being collected at the college as part of GPC Newton’s Recycle Expo.
A box to collect the recyclables will be in Building 1-N. Collections will be taken from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Thursday, April 19. The recycling expo is sponsored by the GPC Newton Sustainability Committee and part of the college-wide Earth Week activities.
The Georgia Perimeter College Newton Campus is located at 239 Cedar Lane, Covington. For information on other Earth Week activities at GPC, go to sustain.gpc.edu/earthday or call the Southeastern Institute for Sustainability at 678-891-3512.
