Managing Math Anxiety
Friday Morning February 17th, 2012
Cheryl Ooten, Mathematics Professor Emeritus, Santa Ana College, has taught all levels of mathematics from basic math through calculus counseling math anxious students for over 30 years. Based on her experience as math teacher and psychotherapist, Cheryl will speak about how to help students overcome their negative perceptions about math using positive psychology, brain-based learning, and study skills techniques. Students turn failure into success as they practice these new skills on basic math content. She will share class-tested learning strategies with an effective illustration program to help students achieve a new level of confidence in their math abilities in the classroom and beyond.



An Evening of Math Humor
Friday Evening February 17th, 2012
Lew Lefton is a faculty member in the School of Mathematics at Georgia Tech, where his responsibilities include being the Director of Information Technology for the College of Sciences. Lefton is not just your ordinary geek. He is an accomplished and experienced comedian who has done stand up and improv comedy for over 25 years. He is also involved in the community, where he directs a high school Improv comedy troupe called D.U.C.K., and leads a "geek" club at a local middle school called S.T.E.M.C.E.L.L. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math Club to Encourage a Love of Learning).



A History of Mathematics and Classroom Applications!
Saturday Morning February 18th, 2012
Dr. Sloan Despeaux is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Her research interests include nineteenth-century mathematics, mathematicians, and scientific journals in Britain. She organizes a biennial undergraduate conference on the history of mathematics called SMURCHOM (the Smoky Mountain Undergraduate Research Conference on the History of Mathematics). She has recently published in Historia Mathematica, Annals of Science, and Notes and Records of the Royal Society of London.



Improving Student Performance in Collegiate Math Classes
Saturday Morning February 18th, 2012
Tom Carson is the author of several textbooks, pre-algebra, Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Elementary and Intermediate Algebra (Pearson publishing) Currently, he teaches part time at Columbia State Community College and full time at Franklin Classical School in Franklin, Tennessee. From 1991 to 2003, Tom taught at Midlands Technical College in the Developmental Mathematics Program, where he was honored with a NISOD Excellence in Teaching award and a Who’s Who among American Teachers award. He served on the faculty council and has been a board member of the South Carolina Association of Developmental Educators (SCADE). He has been a presenter at several conferences on topics such as combating innumeracy, writing in mathematics, and implementing learning styles and study strategies in math courses.
