As we move along in the twenty-first century, new challenges await us, not the least of which is the delivery of library and information services. While librarians are primary providers of such services, they are supported by an increasingly growing number of library support staff whose duties may include (but are not limited to) checking out materials at the circulation desk, assisting with reference questions and ordering, processing , and repairing library materials (books, CD's, video and audiotapes, DVD's, and periodicals).

In smaller libraries, library technicians may even be the primary provider of information services under the consultation of a librarian who serves in a consulting capacity. As the field of information grows, so does the need for library paraprofessionals. There are opportunities for employment in many types of libraries: school, academic, public, and special (law, health science, business, and museums for example).

The Library & Information Science Technology program offered by Georgia Perimeter College provides the student with a variety of educational experiences. It is intended to offer credit-bearing educational opportunities to persons already in the field as well as those seeking an education as a Library Technician as part of the college experience leading to future employment. Classes consist not only of traditional lectures and classroom discussions but also include a number of field trips to area libraries.

Beginning in 2010, the majority of LIST courses will be offered online which encourages enrollment of students living far from the college or working library personnel whose schedule will not permit them to attend every class session.
