Academic Honesty Statement

Department of Social Sciences

Dunwoody Campus

As a community committed to learning, Georgia Perimeter College recognizes that students shall not attempt to defraud, deceive, or mislead an instructor in arriving at an honest grade assessment.

Violations of the cheating policy will result in a grade of '0' for the assignment in question, and may, at the instructor's discretion, result in a failing grade for the course.

Unless specifically authorized by the instructor, the following are examples of cheating. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list.

A. Cheating on a test or quiz:

    1. Looking at or copying from another student's work.
    2. Allowing another student to look at or copy your own work.
    3. Having a copy of the test before actually taking the test.
    4. Communicating with anyone except the student's instructor using any form of communication (including electronic communications such as e-mail).
    5. Accessing unauthorized material whether it be student notes, printed material, or material accessed electronically.

B. Plagiarizing on a paper. Plagiarism is a particular form of cheating that involves presenting as one's own the ideas or work of another. It includes:

    1. Using direct quotations without quotations marks or proper citation.
    2. Using other people's ideas without proper attribution.
    3. Submitting another person's work as one's own.
    4. Submitting work that is not, substantially, one's own words, even if properly attributed.

Academic Honesty Procedures have been established by Georgia Perimeter College to insure due process in cases of cheating, and include the right to a hearing before the College Court. A penalty in addition to the grade penalty that the faculty member may assign may be established by the Court if the student is found guilty. A copy of the procedures is in the Student Handbook (Appendix I).
