Geology
There are many
different Science Programs of Study in which to follow. You can earn
an Associate in Arts in such areas as Biology, Chemistry, and
Physics. Alternatively, you could earn an Associate of Science
degree in such areas as Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry, or
Pre-Pharmacy. GPC also offers Associate of Science degrees in career
program areas of Nursing and Dental Hygiene.
COURSES
GEOL 1121 - PHYSICAL GEOLOGY (3 semester credit hours)
Prerequisite: Exit or exemption from all Learning
Support and ESL requirements
Optional Corequisite: GEOL 1121L
This course is the study of the earth and the processes
which shape it. The course offers an overview of plate
tectonics, volcanism, earthquakes, mountain building,
weathering, erosion, soil, origin of minerals and rocks, and
water and energy resources. A field trip is optional.
GEOL 1121L - PHYSICAL GEOLOGY LABORATORY (1 semester
credit hour)
Pre or Corequisite: GEOL 1121
This is a laboratory to accompany GEOL 1121. The laboratory
provides practical experience in identifying common rocks and
minerals, examination of aerial photos and satellite images, and
in reading topographic and geologic maps.
GEOL 1122 - HISTORICAL GEOLOGY (3 semester credit hours)
Prerequisite: Exit or exemption from all
Learning Support and ESL requirements
Optional Corequisite: GEOL 1122L
This course is the study of the history of earth and
life through time. It provides an overview of evolution,
fossils, dinosaurs, geologic time, radiometric dating,
origin of the earth, environments, and the geologic
history of North America. The field trip is optional.
GEOL 1122L - HISTORICAL GEOLOGY LABORATORY (1
semester credit hour)
Pre or Corequisite: GEOL 1122
This is the laboratory to accompany GEOL 1122. The
laboratory provides practical experience in studying
sedimentary rocks to interpret depositional processes
and environments, examination of fossils and their use
in age determinations, correlation of rock units,
interpreting geologic history from maps, and the
regional geology of North America
