Governors Teaching Fellows Program
 
History of Program & Eligibility
 
Established in 1995 by Governor Zell Miller, the Governor's Teaching Fellows (GTF) Program is designed for faculty members who teach at accredited public or private colleges or universities in the state of Georgia (other than the University of Georgia) to address our statewide need to improve undergraduate instruction. In the program's first six years, over 160 faculty members, representing more than 75 different disciplines, professions and teaching areas, from more than 45 Georgia institutions, have participated in the three options in the program: (1) The Summer Symposium Program, (2) The Academic Year Symposia Program, and (3) The Academic Year in Residence Program. Programs focus on an array of instructional, technological, and professional topics that emerge from the interests and needs of the participants. These symposia are also designed to help the Fellows implement projects that will enhance the quality of undergraduate education on their home campuses. Participants are selected on the basis of their teaching experience, on their ability to have an impact on their own campuses and on a strong commitment by their home institution for release time and other forms of support for the duration of their participation in the program. Any full-time, regular faculty member can apply. The Governor's Teaching Fellow Program represents a strong and tangible commitment to the continuing development of both public and independent higher education in the state of Georgia.

Summer Symposium
 
Participants in this program attend a two-week symposium on the University of Georgia campus. This symposium includes a combination of structured instructional and faculty development activities and independent study on the part of each participant. Participants must contribute to the GTF program by planning and developing an appropriate project related to the curricular and instructional programs of their respective institutions and by implementing the project upon return to their home campuses. At the close of the program, participants will be expected to report on the GTF Program's activities and the progress of their projects. Participants receive a stipend for full participation in the ten-day symposium. Meals, lodging, and travel expenses are provided by the Governor's Teaching Fellows Program. 
 
 
Academic Year Symposia Program 
 
This program allows participants to attend three-day symposia held six or seven times over the academic year while also engaging in instructional improvement projects on their home campuses. The symposia include a combination of structured instructional and faculty development activities as well as self-directed activities designed to meet individual needs. Participants must work with their home institutions to arrange for their absence during the Academic Year Symposia dates. Participants must contribute to the GTF program by planning and developing an appropriate project related to the curricular and instructional programs of their respective institutions and by implementing the project at their home campuses. At the close of the program, participants will be expected to report on the GTF Program's activities and the progress of their projects. Participants receive a stipend for each day of full participation on campus. Meals, lodging, and travel expenses are provided by the Governor's Teaching Fellows Program. 
 
 
Nomination Process
 
  1. Faculty Self-Nomination: With the appropriate encouragement and support from your institutional colleagues, send the following application materials to your Discipline Dean: 
    • A letter of interest, indicating your teaching experience, interest in continuing instructional and professional development and your ability to have an impact on instruction at the college 
    • A current curriculum vitae 
    • A one- to two-page philosophy of teaching statement. 
  2. Discipline Dean Letter of Nomination: The discipline dean will send a letter of nomination and support for the faculty member, along with the faculty member's self-nomination packet, to the Center for Teaching and Learning. These materials must be submitted in hard copy format. No electronic submissions will be considered.
  3. President's Endorsement: Since no more than two participants from one institution can be accepted at one time, no more than three nominations from a single college or university can be submitted per program. The President of the college will select which packets to forward to the Governor's Teaching Fellows Program.
