Wells and Buchanan selected for national All-Star game

Ry’van Buchanan

Georgia Perimeter College basketball standouts Ry’van Buchanan and Nicole Wells have been selected to play in the National Junior College Athletic Association Women’s Basketball All-Star games July 10 and 11 at Pensacola Junior College.

The event at Pensacola’s Lou Ross Center features four teams playing four games and highlights the top two-year college players in the country.

“Ry’van and Nicole will play in two games, one each day. It’s a good showcase—a lot of four-year schools will see these players,” said GPC head coach James Waldon.

“When you think about the number of upcoming sophomore players across the country, it’s a great honor to be chosen to play in this event,” he added.

Buchanan finished the 2009-2010 season as the No. 7 rebounder in the nation. She averaged 12.1 boards per game, led the Jaguars in scoring with a 13.2 average and averaged one blocked shot per game.

Nicole Wells

A 6-foot forward from Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta, Buchanan was named to the NJCAA Region 17 all-tournament team and was a second-team all-region selection.

Wells, a 6-2 forward from Harlem High School in Augusta, made the All-Region 17 first team. She averaged 8.9 points per game and was GPC’s No. 2 rebounder with 7.2 per game.

As freshmen, Wells and Buchanan were significant contributors to the Jaguars’ late-season run that ended in the region semifinals in Americus, Ga., with a loss to eventual champion South Georgia Tech. GPC finished with a 15-15 record.

Georgia Perimeter will return four of its starting five for the 2010-2011 season. Along with Wells and Buchanan, also coming back will be starting guards Tyra Smith and Jasmine Jones.
