|Course Title||Improving Voice And Articulation|
This is a laboratory-oriented class for the correction of deficiencies in voice or articulation. Careful analysis of each student's speech problems is made, followed by intensive directed exercises for their correction, based on an understanding of the speaking mechanism and of elementary phonetics. The course is not designed for the treatment of foreign dialect or severe speech disorders requiring speech therapy.
|Expected Educational Results|
As a result of completing this course, the student will be able to:
(Note: in many cases adult dialect cannot be changed dramatically during a semester. That comes with time and practice, as does any skill.)
- Demonstrate an elementary knowledge of phonetics (International Phonetic Alphabet, American English part)
- Identify omissions, substitutions, additions, and distortions of speech sounds
- Evaluate improvement in his/her own articulation and speech patters.

- They develop their speaking skills through a variety of speaking activities.
- They develop their listening skills through active and analytical listening to the professor, their taped speech, and classmates.
- They develop their reading comprehension skills by reading the text, enunciation practice exercises using the International Phonetic Alphabet, and handout materials.
- They develop writing skills through quizzes, tests, diction evaluations, and other written assignments.
- Learners demonstrate effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills through the analysis of correct and incorrect speech sound formation, annotation, and production.

|Assessment of Outcome Objectives|
Students will be graded on quizzes and written exams on the textbook material. Evaluations will include transcription of the International Phonetic Alphabet and oral assignments given for the improvement of articulation. Assignment weights will be presented to students at the beginning of the semester.
Voices will be tape recorded at the beginning of the semester and at the end of the term. Part of the final exam grade will be voice recording, and the other part will be a written exam on textbook and class material.
The course will be assessed one semester out of every three years. Students in each section of COMM 1610 will complete a written exam during the final exam period for the course. During the last week of the semester, each student will complete a tape recording of the same exercise used for the initial recording of the student's voice during the first week of the semester. Duplicated copies of the final exams and the initial and final tape recordings will be given to a committee of speech faculty appointed by the Humanities Curriculum Coordinator.
USE OF ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
The speech faculty will use the information gathered from the departmental assessment to revise the course outline and course syllabus as needed.
- Methods of Assessing Effectiveness of this course:
The course will be assessed one quarter out of every three years. Students in each section of THEA 1610 will complete a written exam during the final exam period for the course. During the last week of the semester each student will complete a tape recording of the same exercise used for the initial recording of the student's voice during the first week of the term. Duplicated copies of the final exams and the initial and final tape recordings will be given to a committee of speech faculty appointed by the Fine Arts Curriculum Coordinator.
- Specific Plan for Gathering Assessment Data:
Duplicated, ungraded exams will be given to the assessment committee, along with initial and final tape recordings of students' voices.
- Methods of Analyzing Assessment Data:
After collecting the tests and recordings, the committee will evaluate a representative sampling of both the written exams and voice recordings. No fewer than half the materials from each course section will be evaluated. Mastery of course material and improvement in articulation will be the criteria used in evaluating the materials. The committee will report its findings and recommendations to the Fine Arts Curriculum Coordinator by the last class day of the semester following the term in which assessment occurs. The report shall be in memorandum form with copies to the instructors of the classes being assessed.
- Method for Discussion of Data Analysis:
By mid-point of the semester following receipt of assessment results, the Curriculum Coordinator will arrange a meeting with all speech faculty members who teach THEA 1610 to discuss implications for course improvement. Any changes resulting from the assessment will go into effect the following academic year.
