|Course Title||Jazz Dance II|
This course provides practice of jazz technique at the intermediate level with emphasis on the varied styles of choreography used in theatre and concert productions. It consists of two studio hours one day per week.
|Expected Educational Results|
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- perform intermediate jazz dance skills with effective technique;
- apply appropriate jazz dance terminology in written and oral communication;
- evaluate their growth in agility, balance, strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, and movement
- participate in creative and improvisation group activities;
- apply appropriate criteria for making aesthetic judgments about dance;
- discuss the choreographic elements of various pioneers and contemporary jazz dance choreographers and
- integrate sensitivity to tempo, rhythm, dynamics of musical accompaniment, and individual breath phrasing
- demonstrate self-awareness and awareness of others when performing and engaging in group activities;
- demonstrate effective oral, written and critical thinking skills as they apply to dance technique and
- apply basic choreographic methods to compose sequences or combinations;
- utilize kinesthetic perception as a vehicle for self-improvement;
- discuss dance as a means toward wellness;
- discuss dance as a vehicle for expressing cultural, historical, political or social issues.
|General Education Outcomes|
Apply and integrate knowledge of basic jazz dance vocabulary (movement vocabulary and terminology), techniques, styling,
etiquette, and musicality in the performance basic jazz dance.
- Elements of technique and terminology: isolations and floor work routines, center combinations and
- Elements of movement (space, time and energy)
- Cultural and historical influences
- Dance and wellness
- Dance aesthetics: defining dance, dance as an art form, aesthetics as a process and product of culture
- Various elements and evaluation methods of dance production and performance
- Elements of improvisation and choreography techniques
Specific assignments and procedures for evaluating student performance in this course will be described in the
individual class syllabus, but will include the following:
- Attendance and active participation in dance technique and class discussions
- Two movement evaluations (mid-term and final)
- Required live performance attendance and written critique
- A minimum of one written examination
- Written self-evaluation assignment
- Final choreographic project (solo or group)
|Assessment of Outcome Objectives|
A. COURSE GRADE
The course grade will be determined by written assignments, dance skills test and final dance
project. When appropriate, opportunities for extra credit will be offered to students, the value of which
to be determined by the instructor.
- At least one written assignment is required. The written exam will be valued at no less than 20% and
no more than 50% of the total grade.
- Competencies must be demonstrated by students in dance-related activities specific to the
class. Dance-related skills tests will be valued at no less than 35% and no more than 65% of the total
B. DEPARTMENTAL ASSESSMENT
Every three years an assessment recording will be made of the culminating dance routine in the class.
USE OF ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
A theatre departmental committee will review the item analysis to determine
- if the level of student
success was achieved,
- if a revision of course instruction to enhance student achievement is needed,
- a specific time line for implementation of recommended changes.
