This course is designed for student who have had little or no prior individual instruction in voice. The class introduces beginning vocal technique in such areas as posture, breathing, exercises correct vowel formation, diction, rhythm and pitch. The course also includes instruction in practicing and preparing songs to perform. Students are expected to sing individually as well as with the group during class time and for the final exam. Any student who wishes to register for individual lessons in a subsequent term must pass this course with a B or better. This course is not intended for music majors. No additional music fee for this class.

As a result of completing this course, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate correct posture and breathing for singing
2. Demonstrate clear singing diction
3. Demonstrate practice techniques
4. Demonstrate song preparation
5. Perform assigned vocal exercises
6. Perform at least one assigned song from memory

A student who completes Voice Class will be able to:
1.    Visually identify and demonstrate:

2.    Vocally demonstrate in assigned work:
a. Correct pitch
b. correct rhythm
c. correct vowel formation
3.    Perform
a. assigned exercises
b. at least one assigned song from memory

1.    COURSE GRADE
The final grade is based on:
a. Accuracy of performance of assigned literature
b. Weekly evaluations
c. Class participation

2.    DEPARTMENTAL ASSESSMENT
  
The student's performance of the literature and technical assignment prepared during the semester is a direct assessment of their knowledge and understanding they have gained. Final performance jury exam and a grade of B or better allows for further private lesson study.
USE OF ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
Evaluation of performance jury exam and final grade determine placement in subsequent private lesson enrollment.
