This course offers a comprehensive appreciation of the humanities -- art, music, and literature -- that attempts to give the four-year transfer student a structured, in-depth approach to the entire artistic heritage of the Western World. It covers cultural activities from the beginnings of civilization to the Renaissance. Visits to Cultural centers in the community may be included.
|Expected Educational Results|
As a result of completing this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the development of the basic ideas of Western civilization and the aesthetic expressions of these ideas.
Demonstrate an understanding of an aesthetic expression (either art, music, literature or philosophy).
Demonstrate their ability to analyze an aesthetic expression through their review of an out-of-class activity (called an encounter) in which they have participated.

The Age of Charlemagne
The High Middle Ages
The Fourteenth Century

A. Course Grade
1. The course grade will be as follows:
Tests and dailies 50%
Final exam 25%
2. In addition to objective questions, each test and the final will contain question(s) requiring the student to write answers based on an objective listed above. An encounter will consist of a report or review of the student's out-of-class participation in a cultural activity. All tests and exams will be prepared by the individual instructor who will determine the course grade.
B. Departmental Assessment
This course will be assessed one quarter every three years.
1. Method of assessment
a. Every student in each section will be required to complete an objective assessment questionnaire prepared by the Humanities Course Assessment Committee.
b. Every student will be required to write an analysis of an aesthetic expression (encounter) before the end of the quarter.
2. Specific plan
a. On the last day of class, the Humanities 1303 questionnaire will be explained and given to each section by faculty teaching the course.
b. Each Humanities 1303 instructor will send a representative sampling of encounters from each section.
3. Methods of analyzing data
a. Those teaching Humanities 1303 will compile the Scantron responses, tabulate the open-ended questions, and send them to the Humanities Course Assessment Committee, which will compile the answers and publish the data.
b. Copies of the sample encounters will be made available to the Humanities faculty as well as the results of the committee's evaluation of the encounters.
4. Method for discussion of data analysis
All faculty who teach Humanities 1303 and other interested professionals will meet to discuss the results of the assessment and their implications for syllabus revision.
USE OF ASSESSMENT RESULTS:
The Humanities faculty will use the information gathered from the assessment to revise the Course Outline every three years if such revision is deemed beneficial.
