A survey of important works of world literature from ancient times through the mid-seventeenth century
|Expected Educational Results|
As a result of completing this course, the student will be able to:
The students will demonstrate an understanding of the historical development of literature in relation to the diverse cultural milieu which produced it.
The students will demonstrate an understanding of the literary genres and styles from the periods covered in the course.
The students will demonstrate the ability to write an analysis and interpretation of the literature of different periods and genres.
The students will be exposed to and/or participate in cultural activities, events or presentations
|General Education Outcomes|
1. The course addresses the general education outcome relating to effective communication through listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
Students read poetry and prose aloud in class and privately.
Students listen to lectures and act as an audience through responses.
Students listen to oral reports and tapes as well as films and recordings.
Students read primary sources in textbook and secondary sources in the library.
Students take notes, respond to essay questions, compile bibliographies, and write literary analyses.
Students speak in class through class discussion and student oral reports.
2. The course addresses the general education outcome relating to effective individual and group problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
The students interpret works of literature.
The students discuss published interpretations.
The students participate in class discussions.
The students practice critical thinking through researching and analyzing published critical articles and then discussing the articles in class.
3. The course addresses the general education outcome relating to responding to and making defensible judgments about various artistic works.
The students learn different methods for judging various literary works.
The students learn to make informed judgments beyond mere interpretation and summary.
The instructor will select readings which cover the major periods in the text. These are suggestions for covering course content:
by periods: Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Ancient Greek, Roman, African, Moslem, Medieval, Asian, Renaissance
by genres: Epic poetry, Drama, Lyric poetry, Essays, Tales
|Assessment of Outcome Objectives|
Exams, papers, tests, and a final examination by individual instructors will be used to determine the course grade. Suggested weights are
40 -- 50% Tests, Homework, Oral Reports, and Class Participation
25 -- 35% Writing Assignments
20 -- 25% Final Examination
Each test and the final exam will require but not be limited to essay responses to questions designed for the demonstration of skills in analysis and/or synthesis. Short answer and objective responses may be included.
A critical analysis paper (using secondary sources) on one or more aspects of a representative work or works of literature will be required of each student to develop skills in research, analysis, and synthesis. Instructors may choose from the following suggestions:
a documented literary research paper of six to eight pages may be assigned;
an interpretative paper of approximately five to seven pages accompanied by an annotated bibliography representing a minimum of fifty pages of secondary source reading in three separate sources may be assigned; or
three papers of approximately three pages each, one or more of which must be research based, involving the student in different periods and/or genres covered in the course may be assigned.
