|Course Title||Clinical Dental Hygiene V|

This course provides an advanced application of comprehensive ethical and professional reasoning while delivering the dental hygiene process of care with limited instructor involvement and increased emphasis on time management.
|Expected Educational Results|
As a result of completing this course and in compliance with established policies and procedures of the Dental Hygiene Department and Georgia Perimeter College, the student will be able to:
1. Assess and complete the dental hygiene prophylactic needs on given patients following data collection from the medical/dental history, vital signs, extra/intra oral examination, dental radiographs, dental/periodontal charting, and current oral hygiene home care techniques.
2. Differentiate between normal and abnormal oral tissue conditions on given patients and record the information on appropriate clinical forms utilizing the department's format, symbols, and abbreviations.
3. Assess the need, type, and number of radiographs to be exposed on given patients. Develop, mount, interpret, record, and process each set ofradiographs exposed. Properly file and/or mail as requested.
4. Demonstrate maximum efficiency in instrumentation and debridement skills through process evaluations on a given patient classification.
5. Demonstrate maximum efficiency in supplemental clinical skills of polishing and ultrasonic scaling on given patients.
6. Assess the need, prepare, place, and reduce (if necessary) pit and fissure sealants on given patients following the criteria and procedures utilized in the Dental Materials' course.
7. Assess the need, plan, implement, and evaluate a polished amalgam restoration (Class I and 11) on a given patient(s). Remove amalgam overhangs, if applicable.
8. Assess the need, process, pour and trim diagnostic models on given patients.
9. Assess the need and provide individualized patient oral health education based on the current oral health conditions and home care routine.
10. Follow established emergency procedures protocol, if applicable.
11. Demonstrate the ability to sharpen and to maintain sharp dental hygiene instruments during the dental hygiene appointment.
12. Provide dental hygiene treatment for patients at the Veterans' Administration Medical Center under the direct supervision of dental/dental hygiene staff.
13. Observe, provide limited assistance, and submit a written journal of the dental lab experience at the Veterans' Administration Medical Center.
14. Demonstrate a professional manner by:
a. following the Department's Professional Clinic Dress code without deviation.
b. showing respect to faculty/staff.
C. showing respect to fellow classmates.
d. showing respect and promptness to all patients in each detail of scheduling appointments and providing dental hygiene treatment.
e. demonstrating professional and ethical judgement and decision making skills while rendering dental hygiene services.
f. attending assigned clinics, record review sessions, and other clinical related activities.
g. completing all written clinical documentation with detailed accuracy, timeliness, and following protocol procedures.
h. respecting and demonstrating the clinic as a treatment facility.
15. Provide assistance to the functioning of the clinic per individual assignments and duties as Dispensary Assistant, Reception Assistant, X-ray Assistant, and Clinical Assistant.
|General Education Outcomes|
This course addresses the same general education outcomes as stated for Clinical Dental Hygiene IV. These outcomes are as follows:
1. Students utilize all forms of communication skills with patients through appointment scheduling, treatment planning, implementation, presentation of oral health care techniques, and a clinic treatment plan project.
2. Students utilize computer applications in the treatment planning and implementation of nutritional counseling on a computer based nutritional analysis program for a clinic treatment plan project.
3. Students demonstrate effective problem-solving and critical thinking skills in the clinical setting on each patient. Patients present with varied oral conditions and home care problems. A dental hygiene treatment plan must be established by the student on each patient utilizing the dental hygiene process of assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
4. Students demonstrate effective utilization of scientific inquiry in the clinical activity of a treatment plan project. Following the dental hygiene process procedures, students must state the oral problem(s) of a given patient; develop a hypothesis from the assessment of data gathered on the patient's current oral conditions; develop a plan; predict expected outcomes for the patient's oral health; implement the plan; and, analyze the results to see if the hypothesis was correct.
The content of this course is the providing of dental hygiene treatment on clinical patients. The course emphasizes the final mastery of dental hygiene clinical skills for the student. Treatment is provided at the North Campus Dental Hygiene Clinic and at authorized off campus facilities. The treatment is provided under the direct supervision of licensed dental and dental hygiene faculty members.

A. Course Grade
This course is a clinical course and has no written examinations or final examination. The course grade is determined by grades earned on:
1. dental hygiene treatment of clinical patients
2. radiographs taken on clinical patients
3. process evaluations with specified competency level.
4. product evaluations
5. treatment plan project
6. duties completed for rotation as Clinical Assistant, Dispensary Assistant, X-ray Assistant, and Reception Assistant
Clinical competency levels for this course are higher than for Clinical Dental Hygiene IV. If a level is not met, remediation procedures are stated in the course syllabus. Remediation is continued until the process evaluation competency level is met.

B. Department Assessment
The dental hygiene department maintains full accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation; additionally, by reporting students' pass rates for state/regional/national licensing exams, the department will be able to assess the effectiveness of this course as well as the whole curriculum.
USE OF ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
The faculty function as the curriculum committee, along with science department faculty, and, as necessary, faculty from other departments are used to assist in periodic reviews of the curriculum. The department also articulates with a Department Advisory Committee, composed of members from the practicing dental and dental hygiene community, to maintain a current picture of the needs of current graduates/practitioners.
