|Course Title||Dental Hygiene V: Advanced Concepts In Dental Hygiene Practice II|
|Prerequisite(s)||DHYG 2907 and DHYG 2909, each with a "C" or better|
This course is designed to continue the development of the dental hygiene student in advanced instrumentation and critical thinking skills utilized during comprehensive care of the periodontal and special needs patients. Ethical and legal aspects of the dental hygiene profession, employability skills and the concept of lifelong learning are reinforced as students prepare to enter the profession.
|Expected Educational Results|
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Differentiate between virtues, ethics, etiquette, and protocol.
- Describe a personal and professional code of ethics.
- Be able to apply the ADHA Code of Ethics to practical situations.
- Describe the legal concepts related to the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene.
- Define malpractice and identify the common target areas for dental malpractice lawsuits.
- Discuss the legal concepts affecting the dental hygienist-patient relationship and the dental hygienist-dentist relationship.
- Recognize patient rights, abuse, neglect, and reporting procedures.
- Identify the Georgia Board of Dentistry Rules and Regulations governing the practice of dentistry as it pertains to the dental hygienist.
- Describe a functional, chronological, and combination resume.
- Plan, develop and construct a personal resume for seeking employment based on their clinical skills and professional contributions in the field of dental hygiene.
- Develop and construct a cover letter that accompanies the personal resume.
- Define and identify the interview process for dental hygiene employment.
- Differentiate between legal and illegal interview questions.
- Respond appropriately to both legal and illegal interview questions.
- Recognize appropriate questions for an applicant to ask a potential employer during the interview process.
- Identify three follow-up methods for post interview contact.
- Identify the process of employment negotiation.
- Recognize the significance of a written letter to accept or decline an offer of employment.
- Demonstrate the application of advanced instrumentation modalities in co requisite clinical setting.
- Identify new instruments with respect to design that are appropriate for advanced root instrumentation.
- Discuss and reflect on patient care experiences at Enrichment sites through class/group discussion, journal entries, and written evaluations.
- Discuss and reflect on the value of clinical research as it relates to patient care in current time.
|General Education Outcomes|
Students utilize all forms of communication skills through preparational activities of resume and cover letter-writing, role playing of interview techniques and ethical dilemma, and reading assignments.
- Problem-solving and critical thinking
Students utilize effective problem-solving and critical thinking skills as hypothetical and real life dental/dental hygiene ethical and jurisprudence case studies are discussed.
Students apply the knowledge of personal, societal, and ethical development to living and working in a culturally diverse environment through professional and personal management of self for employment issues that are presented in class and during interviews for employment.

The content of this course will include:
- Selecting a Practice Setting and Preparations for the Interview
- Employment as a Dental Hygienist
- Professional and Personal Management of Self for Employment
- Jurisprudence Issues relating to the practice of dental hygiene
- Ethical Decision making while practicing dental hygiene in all settings.
- Laws and Rules Governing the Practice of Dentistry/Dental Hygiene in Georgia
- Advanced Instrumentation techniques and skills.
|Assessment of Outcome Objectives|
- Examinations and a Final Examination.
- Course Activities
- Development of a cover letter and resume. Student will develop a cover letter and resume that may be utilized for seeking employment as a dental hygienist. Guidelines for the format of the letter and resume are presented.
- Group/Class discussion seminars to reflect on clinical experiences in regards to patient care experience.
- Use of case studies to develop and assess studentís understanding and knowledge of advanced instrumentation techniques that may be utilized for individualized patient care.
The dental hygiene department maintains full accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation: additionally, by reporting studentsí pass rates for state/regional/national licensing exams, the department will be able to assess the effectiveness of this course as well as the whole curriculum.
USE OF ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
The faculty function as the curriculum committee, along with science department faculty, and, as necessary, faculty from other departments assist in periodic reviews of the curriculum. The department also articulates with an Advisory Committee, composed of members from the practicing dental and dental hygiene community, to maintain a current picture of the needs of current graduates/practitioners.
