|Course Title||Interpersonal Communication|
|Prerequisite(s)||Exit or exemption from Learning English and reading or all ESL requirements|
This course focuses on the opportunity for students to learn and understand the principles, theories and some of the practical applications of effective interpersonal communication and to become sensitive to the relational development of these ideas in various contexts, particularly involving relationships within families and among co-workers and friends.
|Expected Educational Results|
As a result of completing this course, the student will be able:
- To identify terminology, concepts, theories, points of view, and
evaluate important research findings within the discipline of interpersonal communication studies.
- To heighten awareness of the role interpersonal
communication has upon everyday life in personal relationships,
in leisure activities, within professional organizations, and
when at work.
- To perform as an effective interpersonal communicator by:
- practical application of the communication skills discussed.
- adapting these skills to themselves, to others, and situations.
- engaging in and improving active listening.
- monitoring interpersonal communication and its effects; and
- analysis of oneself, others, and all interpersonal
relationships in the communication process.
- To gain confidence and a sense of ease as a competent communicator in Interpersonal settings.
|General Education Outcomes|
- Learners will develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in the following ways:
- They will develop speaking skills through peer group activities, class discussions, and more formal activities such as panel discussions, group presentations and individual speaking assignments.
- They will develop listening skills through active listening exercises, note taking during the lectures, and by responding to oral instructions given in class.
- They will develop reading skills through comprehension of the textbook
materials, analysis of both student and professional reports, and assessment of print and electronic resources.
- They will develop writing skills by keeping a weekly journal, and composing and revising their research papers.
- Learners will demonstrate effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the following ways:
- They will learn a variety of strategies for improving interpersonal communication skills.
- They will learn to evaluate themselves and others communication strategies and to incorporate these new ideas into their own lives.
- They will learn the methods and rationale for reflection upon interpersonal communication practices in everyday life.
- Learners will evaluate, develop and practice new communication skills in a supportive environment.
- They will learn the vocabulary of interpersonal communication theory and practice.
- They will gain knowledge of the concepts, theories and research findings in interpersonal communication.
- They will understand the various contexts (friendship, work, family, etc.) in which interpersonal communication occurs.
Interpersonal communication techniques to be taught include the following:
Evaluating effective nonverbal communication
Increasing effectiveness in interpersonal communication
Increased communication self-awareness
Increasing accuracy and evaluation in interpersonal situations
Overcoming conversational problems
Maintaining interpersonal relationships
|Assessment of Outcome Objectives|
Projects include the following:
- At least one brief essay/research paper that explores the relationship between interpersonal communication and every day life.
- Active participation in weekly class exercises and activities that put the theory interpersonal communication into practice.
- An interpersonal journal in which students will examine and reflect upon their daily interpersonal communication experiences.
- Tests and a final exam will be given over the course of the class to test student comprehension of course content.
- Every five years a departmental committee appointed by the Communication committee will select a representative sample of the interpersonal communication class course materials.
- The selected course materials will be evaluated according to the criteria set forth in the Expected Educational Results section of the common course outline.
USE OF ASSESSMENT FINDINGS:
The Communication 1201 and 2105 Committee will use the information gathered from the departmental assessments to revise the course outline and course syllabus as needed.
