Library Users [top]

Georgia Perimeter College Libraries are open to the public. However, only currently enrolled GPC students (including joint enrollment and transient students), faculty, and staff have borrowing privileges.

Circulation Policies [top]
  • The GPC JCard or another photo ID Card is required for checking out circulating and reserve materials.
  • Library books circulate for 28 days, popular books for 14 days. Materials may be renewed twice, if no requests are pending.
  • There is a limit of twenty items total that may be checked out, and a limit of five books on the same subject.
  • Popular videos and DVDs circulate for 5 days with a limit of 3 total videos and DVDs.
  • CDs circulate for 14 days with a limit of 5 CDs.
  • Records circulate for 28 days with a limit of 5 records.

  • If a patron wishes to check out materials currently in use, the Circulation Staff can place a hold request into the online system.
  • Reserve materials are available upon request at a GPC Library Circulation Desk. These materials are placed on reserve by instructors and have varying borrowing periods that range from 1 hour to 1 week.

Email Notices FAQ [top]
  • What are email notices?
Georgia Perimeter College Libraries will periodically send notices to your GPC email account. These email notices get to you faster than the old print notices did, and are kinder to the library budgets and the environment!

Notices may include information about lost or overdue materials or reminders of materials that will be due shortly and instructions for renewing those items online. All notices will also contain the name and phone number of the campus library you should contact if you have any questions about the item.

  • Can I have GPC Libraries notices sent to a different email account?
This is not currently possible. We receive the data used to create your patron record from your file in Banner. The GPC email address is the default email address in those records, so it will overwrite any changes made to the email address in your library patron record. If your GPC email address is incorrect in Banner, you will need to contact the Service Desk to have it corrected.

  • Will you notify me by email before my items are due?
Yes! For any item that has a loan period of five days or greater, you should receive what is called a “courtesy notice” about two days before the item is due. This notice will tell you when the item is due and give you instructions for renewing online. (Items with loan periods of less than five days, like reserves, will not receive courtesy notices.)

  • I have materials checked out, but haven’t received any notices about them. Is something wrong?
Check your junk e-mail folder. Our emails may be mistakenly routed there. If that is the case, please add us as to your Safe Senders list. If not, contact us and we’ll be happy to investigate.

  • I didn’t receive any email notices. Do I still have to pay fines for overdue or lost materials?
Yes, whether or not you receive notices, you are still responsible for returning you materials by the due date and in good condition. Notices, whether they are mailed or emailed, are offered to you as a courtesy. All of the information about the GPC or GIL Express library materials you have checked out is available through the "My Account" feature in GIL@GPC Classic and GIL-Find@GPC. This allows you to monitor all of your obligations to all USG Libraries at any time.

Fines and Fees [top]

Fines are charged to encourage the return of materials in a timely manner and the care of materials while they are checked out. Fines may be paid in cash or by check made payable to Georgia Perimeter College. If lost items are returned after fines are paid, fines will be refunded minus the $35.00 nonrefundable processing fee per item. No refunds for lost items will be made without library receipt of payment. Refunds are only available six months from your receipt date. Your library account will be blocked when fines of $15.00 or more are reached. Borrowing privileges are suspended until the fines are paid. Your Banner account will be blocked when books have not been returned and are declared lost. You will not have access to your transcripts, grades, accounts receivable, or graduation.

Requesting Materials From Other Libraries [top]
  • Intercampus Loan
If you are unable to access desired materials at your GPC campus library, the first step to take is to request them from another GPC campus library through Intercampus Loan.
  • GIL Universal Catalog & GIL Express
If the materials are unavailable at the GPC libraries, the next step is to check the GIL Universal Catalog (UC). If the materials are available in another University System of Georgia library, you then place a GIL Express Request. (Please see GIL Express Policies for GPC for more information.)
  • Interlibrary Loan
If you are unable to access the desired materials at another University System of Georgia library, you may then request an Interlibrary Loan through the reference department of any GPC campus library.
GIL Express Policies for GPC [top]
  • All currently enrolled students and currently employed faculty and staff at GPC are eligible for GIL Express. Retired faculty and staff may borrow GPC materials, but they cannot place GIL Express requests.

  • GPC students must pay lost item fees to the school that owns the item. The student will be charged a statewide processing fee of $35.00 in addition to the lost item fee charged by the owning library.

  • GPC charges $70.00 ($35 lost item fee + $35 processing fee) for lost and damaged items.

  • GPC students may place remote GIL Express requests through the Universal Catalog or go to any University System of Georgia School and check out. A valid GPC JCard is required. A remote GIL Express request can only be placed through the Universal Catalog.

  • GPC students may return their items to any USG school.

  • Overdue fines will NOT be charged for GIL Express transactions, however some institutions may charge recall fines. A student will be blocked in Banner if they have one or more items overdue. In addition, the student is blocked from checking out materials from any USG school, including GPC. The block is removed only when the student returns the item or pays for the item.

  • The statewide loan period for GIL Express is 28 days. Two 28-day renewals are allowed. After 2 renewals, the item must be returned to the holding library and requested again. Once an item becomes overdue, the student must return the item and request it again.

  • GPC students may borrow 100 items from USG schools at one time. Each school sets the limit for the number of items a student may have out from their school. For example, USG students may not check out more than 10 GPC items at one time.

  • For GIL Express items, GPC loans only 28-day circulating books and musical scores. Popular books, reference books, reserve items, nonprint materials, and most graphic novels are not eligible for GIL Express.

  • Generally, GPC students will receive their GE requests within 4 business days. Items will be held for 10 days before being sent back to the owning institution.

  • Students are encouraged to check "My Account" from the GIL Catalog. All of the items that have been requested, that are in-transit to any selected pick-up library, that are on hold, that are checked out, and all fines, fees and outstanding blocks can be viewed on the student's "My Account" screen. This is the only place that all of this information displays together.
