How to use MyMathLab (MML)
MyMathLab integration with iCollege is available for most courses that use a Pearson text book. Check with the Math Discipline for specifics on which courses and books include MyMathLab. MyMathLab is considered an epack. So, in order to get started using MyMathLab instructors will need to request that their section be setup using the MyMathLab epack that corresponds to their textbook. You can request that OIT put the MyMathLab epack into a "building section" or a real "teaching section". If your real "teaching section" is not yet available in iCollege go ahead a request a "building section". The first time you choose to use MyMathLab you MUST request the epack. However, each semester after you can copy the previous semesters section over on your own without submitting any requests. The instructions for copying a previous section over are available on the web.
NOTE: New GPC Online Math/CS Part-Time instructors should contact their department chair for special instructions.
If you experience issues with the setup of your iCollege/MyMathLab sections please go to the request form and select option 6. Be sure to detail the issues that you are having in the comments section. Do NOT contact Pearson representatives. Report any difficulties with iCollege and MyMathLab to GPC's Service Desk or the request form.
Once you have your section enabled with MyMathLab you can get assistance with how to use MyMathLab features from the "MyMathLab Faculty Experts" that have been designated on each campus. Your MML faculty expert is your best source for MML help!
Using MyMathLab (MML)
All students must have an access code to use the MyMathLab content found in their iCollege classes.
When you log into your class, you will be asked to enter an access code. If you have not purchased your code, you can request a grace period for up to 15 days until you get your code. After that period, if you have not entered your access code, you will not have access to class resources and assignments.
How do you purchase an Access Code?
1. Bundled with your textbook at the GPC Bookstore
2. Stand Alone code from the GPC Bookstore
Special Cases
Students that have used MyMathLab in previous semesters MAY be able to reuse their access code so long as the same textbook is being used in the class they are now taking. To find out if you are eligible please see: http://www.mathxl.com/support/georgia.htm
Several communications tools from the Wimba product suite are integrated into iCollege. Faculty and Students can use the following Wimba tools to communciate via chat, audio, application sharing, and whiteboarding.
Wimba Pronto (in Pilot Testing- Spring 2011)
Wimba Pronto is an instant messaging, applicaiton sharing, and web conferencing tool that integrates with iCollege.
Wimba Pronto will allow faculty and students to communicate and collaborate without logging into iCollege.
It will even allow students to communicate and collaborate without the instructor “being in the room”.
Below are some features of Wimba Pronto that you may be interested in:
Any student or faculty may use Wimba Pronto. Basic setup instructions are available:
NOTE: The Wimba Pronto client may not be available in campus computer labs, computer classrooms, and on other college computers such as library locations and 'One Stop Shops'.
For detailed training guides please visit: http://webhelp.wimba.com/WP/v3_1/en/User_Guide/
Wimba Classroom
Wimba Classroom is a web conferencing tool that integrates into iCollege. Students and faculty must be logged into iCollege and in a class where the instructor has setup a Wimba Classroom. Generally Wimba Classroom is used to conduct live lectures or host guest speakers. It has many of the same features as Wimba Pronto but rather than being an 'instant messaging' environment it is more for instruction where the faculty member or speaker is conducting a scheduled lecture. A Wimba Classroom session can be archived for later review.
The Office of Information Technology offers training to faculty on how to use Wimba Classroom. Please check http://www.gpc.edu/signup for training times or see http://www.gpc.edu/~gpcits/training/handouts/icollege/wimba_classroom_v8.pdf
Wimba Voice
Wimba Voice allows faculty to add audio-based discussion topics and audio recordings of instructions for assignments from within iCollege. This means that faculty do not need a separate piece of software to record audio files and upload to iCollege.
The Office of Information Technology offers training to faculty on how to use Wimba Classroom. Please check http://www.gpc.edu/signup for training times or see http://www.gpc.edu/~gpcits/training/handouts/icollege/wimba_voice_v8.pdf
Some faculty may require students to use the Respondus LockDown Browser to take quizzes and tests in iCollege. The Respondus LockDown Browser prevents you from accessing websites and other programs while taking a quiz or test.
The Respondus LockDown Browser is separate browser from Internet Explorer or FireFox. It must be downloaded from within iCollege and installed. If your instructor requires you to use the Respondus LockDown Browser, you will be notified when attempting to take the quiz/test. At that time you will be given information on how to install this browser.
Basic setup instructions are available:
Respondus is a Windows only software that faculty can use to create assessments for printing or uploading to iCollege. Respondus provides a nice graphical user interface allowing for easier and quicker formatting (adding images, tables, text formatting) of assessment questions than just creating assessment questions from within iCollege.
Faculty can download and install Respondus on any computer from: http://www.gpc.edu/oit/software
The Office of Information Technology offers training to faculty on how to use Respondus. Please check http://www.gpc.edu/signup for training times or see http://www.gpc.edu/~gpcits/training/handouts/icollege/respondus_v8.pdf
Turnitin.com offers plagiarism detection services as well as online grading/markup of papers and essays. While Turnitin.com does not currently integrate with iCollege it seems to be a service that many faculty who use iCollege also take advantage of.
Faculty may create accounts at Turnitin.com. In order to create an account you must know GPC's account code. This code can be obtained from http://www.gpc.edu/oit/software
The Office of Information Technology offers training to faculty on how to use Turnitin.com as well as the GradeMark features. Please check http://www.gpc.edu/signup for training times or see http://www.gpc.edu/~gpcits/training/training_handouts.html#turn
