Blackboard Instant Messenger(BbIM) is an enterprise instant messaging system that allows student and instructors to communicate in real-time.
BbIM will return to GPC on August 12, 2013. Faculty and students should check their GPC email after August 12, 2013 for invitations to join the BbIM service.
BbIM allows instructors and students to communicate with audio, video, and text chat and to use application sharing outside of the college’s learning management system, iCollege. Chats can be 1-1 or group chats. They can be initiated by students or instructors. They can be between students or between a student and an instructor.
BbIM can be used for spontaneous communication or scheduled communication such as office hours.
This is not GPC’s first time using BbIM. We have used it for over 3 years in an environment that was integrated with iCollege- Vista. However, the switch to iCollege- D2L has changed the way GPC will use BbIM.
- BbIM is NOT integrated to iCollege- D2L. It is integrated with the SIS/Banner.
- Instructors and students enrolled in “academic” courses that exist in both the SIS/Banner and iCollege such as ECON 2105 001 can use BbIM to communicate as a class.
- Instructors and “students” enrolled in courses that ONLY exist in iCollege such as TOwi, Green Zone, Ethics, etc cannot use BbIM to communicate as a class.
Faculty will receive an email invitation in their GPC email account inviting them to join the BbIM service and download the BbIM client.
