Head Men's Basketball Coach
Athletic director and head coach Alfred Barney returns for his 17th season at the helm of the Georgia Perimeter College men's basketball program. Known as an outstanding teacher and recruiter, Barney heads into the 2012-2013 campaign with a variety of talented athletes who look forward to continuing the Jaguars' winning tradition.
During his tenure at GPC, Barney has recorded 382 wins and 158 losses and has transformed the men's basketball program into a regional powerhouse with eight GJCAA tournament championships and six NJCAA National Tournament appearances, including a final-four finish in 2002-2003.
A native of Pelham, Ga., and a graduate of Pelham High School, Barney was an All-Conference and All-State performer in basketball, football, and baseball. In addition, he garnered such accolades as MVP, Best Offensive, and Hustle Award.
Entering Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Ga., following high school, Barney continued his academic and basketball career. After a successful stint at ABAC, earning his associate degree and being named the team's MVP, Barney was awarded a scholarship to Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee.
He played two seasons for the Governors, lettering in 1977-78 and 1978-79. In his final season, Barney was named to the Ohio Valley All-Conference team and All-Academic team, and he also was named the team's MVP. After graduating from Austin Peay with a Bachelor of Science in sociology, Barney remained to work toward his master's degree. In 1981, he graduated with a Master of Science in administration.
He received his first coaching position in 1982, returning to Pelham High School as the boys basketball coach. In Barney's two seasons as head coach, Pelham was an impressive 38-18.
In 1984, Barney became an assistant coach at Georgia Southwestern State University, and the Hurricanes enjoyed their finest season, compiling a 28-5 record and earning an NAIA national tournament invitation. The Hurricanes were 112-51 during his four years at Georgia Southwestern.
Barney served as head coach for four years at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Ala., before being named associate coach at DeKalb College in 1992 and head coach in 1996.
Barney has won numerous awards, including NJCAA Region XVII Coach of the Year, NJCAA District X Coach of the Year, Naismith Junior College Coach of the Year and the Atlanta Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year. He also was inducted into the Mitchell County (Georgia) Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
Barney is married to the former Lois Grubbs. He and his wife reside in Conyers, Ga., with their three daughters, Olivia, Tiffany and LaKaitlen.
Associate Head Basketball Coach
David Dennis is in his 13th season as the associate head coach at Georgia Perimeter College. Dennis has been instrumental developing players and building a winning basketball program over the last eight years.
A Detroit native who had a highly decorated prep career in basketball, football and track at Benedictine High School, Dennis attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College in Michigan where he was a first team All-Region and All-Defense selection. He was voted Most Improved Player as he helped lead Kalamazoo to a 21-6 record and a spot in the regional semifinals.
Dennis previously served under Barney as an assistant coach for four years at Tuskegee University. He was also an assistant under Randolph Barksdale in 1992 at DeKalb College.
In his spare time, Dennis enjoys reading and playing golf and chess. He has one daughter, Khaji, and resides in Doraville.
